Greening Our Cleaning: Laundry – D.I.Y. Fabric Softener

Have you ever walked through a neighbourhood passing by houses and suddenly been struck with a strong unnatural scent, perhaps making the comment, “someone’s doing laundry!”

Most likely it was the smell of a laundry detergent laden with synthetic chemical fragrance, or a fabric softener or dryer sheet you that you smelled, wafting out from a laundry room vent.

CLOTHES DRYING / ANTI-STATIC / SOFTENING: We have a fast easy ‘recipe’ for making your own super effective fabric softener – like grandma used to do and then some!

(SEE ‘RECIPE’ BELOW)

And see our BASIC LAUNDRY SOAP ‘RECIPE’ as well.

Start by using silicone or other dryer balls such as those made from pure wool, in an electric or gas clothes dryer, to prevent static electricity. You can place a drop or two of a pure essential oil of your choosing onto or inside of one of these dryer balls for scent and to kill microbes.

“I remember ditching dryer sheets around about 1987, and didn’t use anything at all in the dryer until someone invented the little silicone “hedgehogs” as i like to call them. Now there are 100% wool dryer balls to which you can add a drop or two of your favourite essential oil or blend. The box says they reduce static, reduce drying time by 25%, eliminate wrinkles, are safe for sensitive skin, and soften clothes naturally.”

“This week I added a drop of Young Living’s ‘Purification’ essential oil blend to wool dryer balls and really loved the way the clothes DIDN’T smell when I was putting them away!”

“Some people use a rolled up ball of tinfoil to eliminate static electricity.”

You can also easily and economically make your own liquid fabric ‘softener’ that works, and will not harm you body or the environment. It is especially nice to use when washing flannelette sheets. See recipe below.

About Mainstream Laundry Products:

After looking into the list of chemicals in laundry products over two decades ago, I never purchased them again. It was scary stuff then, but what’s disturbing today is that ‘mainstream detergent makers’ are no longer required by law to list any of the carcinogenic and hormone-disrupting chemicals in their products on the labels. There is a telephone number to call “for more information”. I’ve tried calling that number, and didn’t get very far.

Today, we have the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment. The EWG’s mission is to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. With breakthrough research and education, they drive consumer choice and civic action.

EWG provides consumer guides to tens of thousands of products including food, personal care products, and cleaning products. The following guide shows how the EWG rates household and cleaning products (interesting to note that we couldn’t find one commercial fabric softener with less than a D to F rating):

WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW:

LINEAR ALKY BENZENE SULFONATES (LAS) are petrochemicals that take a long time to biodegrade, which makes them a hazard to humans and animals (as benzene may cause cancer in humans) and to the environment.

There are countless research documents available, including this one from 1998, when the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services / Public Health Services National Institutes of Health, ran a National Toxicology Program study with over forty-eight distinguished contributors from the scientific community, who issued a report entitled, “Toxicology And Carcinogenesis – Studies of Technical Grade Sodium Xylenesulfonate (CAS NO. 1300-72-7) In F344/N Rats and B6C3F1 Mice (Dermal Studies). You can read their publication No. 98-3380# here

DIOXANE, or 1,4-dioxane, is a synthetic petrochemical, a byproduct of the manufacturing process, and a serious known carcinogen. It is not required to be listed on the label, and was found in over sixty percent of laundry detergents tested in 2010.

PHOSPHATES, used to help your clothes stay clean longer by preventing dirt from sticking to them, are a nightmare to ecosystems, triggering abnormal growth of marine plants.

ARTIFICIAL FRAGRANCES containing Phthalates / synthetic Fragrance or “parfum”. Phthalates interfere with the body’s proteins, are hormone disruptors classified as xenoestrogens, found in personal care products and plastics, and are linked to disease processes, linked to various toxic effects on mammals and fish, and can cause skin and eye irritation as well as allergies.

“Most laundry detergents,” writes Sabina M. DeVita, Ed.D.D.N.M., NNCP, IASP, “contain a potentially toxic brew of chemicals that can leave residues behind on your clothing, be absorbed by your skin or be released into the air you breath.” [p.56, Your Right To Know Vibrational Cleaning Guidebook, 2015. ISBN: 978-1-59930-435-9]

ABOUT DRYER SHEETS & FARBRIC SOFTENERS…here is an article stating that dryer sheets cause hormone imbalance, neurotoxicity, respiratory problems, and even cancer.

I used to tell my clients, “Always remember that your skin is your body’s largest eliminating and absorbing organ!”

ADD THE FOLLOWING PRECIOUS Young Living Essential Oils TO THE ABOVE D.I.Y. BASE:  (Note: You can start at the top of this list of anti-aging and protective essential oils – add the ones you have, and skip the ones you don’t until you acquire them…they may always be added later, and your bottle topped up with the D.I.Y. base.)

20 drops Young Living Therapeutic Grade Myrrh essential oil

10 drops YLTG Frankincense essential oil

10 drops YLTG Palmarosa essential oil

Exceptional Skin Care graphic

You can totally customize* which YLTG essential oils you choose to add to a glorious D.I.Y. Skin Serum such as this!
…And once you have ingredients for a beautiful base, you will be able to make many many batches. Some people use sweet almond oil and apricot kernel oil. I personally prefer apricot kernel oil over sweet almond as it seems to last longer if i don’t use it all up right away…

The first time I made the serum it contained less than half of the essential oils listed. It has evolved over time into the ‘Golden Dewdrop Serum’, and become a favourite part of morning & evening routine

* Problem skin or Acne? Add or substitute a few drops of Cedarwood, Tea Tree, Rosemary, Elemi, or Juniper.
* Dry Skin? Add or substitute a few drops of Sandalwood.
* Sensitive Skin? Try Jasmine, Neroli, Rose, or Ylang Ylang.

Aromatherapy & Overcoming Trauma

“The emotional trauma from accidents, death of loved ones, assault, abuse, etc., can implant its devastation deep within the hidden recesses of the mind, causing life-long problems that seem endless. Being able to release such burdens can bring about a new “lease on life” with a return to motivation and vitality.”Essential Oils Desk Reference, Sixth Edition, © 2014

Consider that a pure therapeutic grade essential oil knowledgeably distilled from properly cultivated aromatic plants, contains unique and complex constituents that facilitate each of the top self-care practices (sleep, nourishment, exercise, breathing, grieving, relaxation, and focus) to assist in overcoming the effects of trauma in it’s many and varied forms.

“An essential oil of a single plant species typically contains 100 to 400 different chemical compounds”, writes Dr. David Steward, Ph.D., D.N.M. in his brilliant book on the chemistry of essential oils. “Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) is [a] good example of a thoroughly studied, thoroughly analyzed oil whose constituents have yet to be all discovered…There are over 200 known compounds identified so far and scientists expect that this is only half of the constituents present in Lavender.”1

Q. How are pure therapeutic grade essential oils distilled from aromatic plants, able to impact the emotional brain through olfaction (our sense of smell) and act as clearers of emotional baggage, uplift, improve mood, and lower depression?

A. Because of the active chemical constituents found naturally therein, and the way our noses are wired into the brain.

Did you know that we do not actually smell with our noses, but rather, with our brain?

olfactory-limbic-bw-graphic

We “smell” with our olfactory system – the nerves that connect directly to the amygdala, the “diencephalon” – or Limbic System. It involves several organs, including the thalamus, hypothalamus, pineal gland, and pituitary gland, all known as the central brain or “emotional brain” and includes not only neural cortex, but endocrine glands as well. It functions, therefore, both electrically and chemically via hormones. (Not surprising to learn that the emotional brain secretes hormones, while the intellectual brain does not).

The Limbic system is the storage center for our feelings and emotional experiences. This part of our brain cannot be communicated to with spoken or written language. Because it responds only to smell, therapeutic grade essential oils provide a powerful means to contact this non-verbal portion of our brains.

Commenting on how the emotional brain works, Dr. David Stewart, Ph.D., D.N.M., writes, “Think of the central brain as a librarian that files and catalogues our emotional memories. Our body is the library. Whenever we experience an emotion, the central brain takes it and files it somewhere in  your body. It could be in your heart, your intestines, your lungs, a specific joint or muscle, or some organ like the liver or kidneys. In order to recall and access that memory, the emotional brain (the librarian) has to locate it in its card index and call it up from wherever it has been stacked in your body. It can then pass it on to the frontal lobes of your brain where it can be consciously recalled, revitalized, re-experienced, and/or articulated.”2

Specific molecular constituents in therapeutic grade essential oils, because of their infinitesimally small size, have the ability not only to cross the blood-brain barrier, but also to stimulate this center of emotions, uplifting, relieving, and releasing deep buried emotion and grief, improving mental awareness, depression, and attitude.

These active molecules are in three classes of oxygenated hydrocarbons, including terpenes, phenols and phenylpropanoids.
The molecular chemistry of properly distilled Frankincense essential oil, for example, includes up to 82% Monoterpenes, a most important group of oxygenated hydrocarbons found in essential oils, thought to restore or awaken the correct information in the cell’s memory (DNA). Other essential oils high in Monoterpenes include those properly distilled from Citrus peel (Lemon / Orange / Grapefruit / Bergamot), Cypress, Black Pepper, Lavender, Rosemary, Juniper, Ravintsara, and Fir. 3  In terms of the aromatherapeutic properties of essential oils Monoterpenes tend to be analgesic, antiseptic, decongestant, and to act as driver oils amplifying the effects of a previously applied oil.4
Myrrh, Cedarwood, Sandalwood, Vetiver, and Ylang Ylang essential oils, when properly harvested, distilled, and bottled, are high in Sesquiterpenes, another group of infinitesimally small oxygenated hydrocarbon molecules, thought to actually delete or erase the bad, miswritten information from cellular memory (DNA), or unscramble it so cells can function normally. Aromatherapeutic properties of Sesquiterpenes include being analgesic, sedative, anti-anxiety, and antidepressant.5
Therapeutic grade essential oils also contain purgative Phenolic compounds. Phenols and phenylpropanoids have a purifying effect cleaning the Receptor Sites at the cellular level, and are thought to be the initiators of healing processes. Full of energy and very stimulating, Phenols have a purifying effect at the cellular level, cleaning cellular receptor sites, and clearing the way for the many other types of healing compounds in the oils to carry out their divinely designated assignments. Clove bud essential oil contains 67% Phenolic compounds, not to mention it’s incredibly high Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity rating. Other therapeutic grade essential oils high in Phenolic compounds include Cinnamon, Thyme, Tarragon, Basil, Fennel, and Oregano.

In a November 2011 in the Yale Scientific Magazine, Cynthia Deng explains how essential oil molecules stimulate olfactory receptors and are linked to specific memories…

“Olfactory sensory neurons carry the signals from the receptors to the olfactory bulb, which filters and begins processing the input signals of the [essential oil]. Mitral cells then carry the output signals from the olfactory bulb to the olfactory cortex, which allows you to perceive and recognize the [scent of that specific aromatic]…Interestingly, the mitral cells do not only lead to the olfactory cortex, they also carry the signals from the [essential oil] to other areas in the brain’s limbic system. Some mitral cells connect directly to the amygdala, the brain structure involved in emotional learning and memory. Indeed, the olfactory system is the only sensory system that involves the amygdala and the limbic system in its primary processing pathway. This link explains why smells are often linked to specific memories.”6

In an August 2016 article posted on ‘Aces Too High News’, science reporter Donna Jackson Nakazawa asks another century-old Question….
Q. “…Shouldn’t physicians consider the whole patient – body and mind – so that they can suggest [behavioural] health tools that will alleviate both the root causes and the symptoms of disease?”7
Research begun in 1996 and over 1500 peer-reviewed studies since, have replicated the same findings…that women who faced three types of childhood adversity had a 60% greater risk of being hospitalized with an auto-immune disease as an adult.
Similar links exist between childhood stressors and adult heart disease, diabetes, migraines, irritable bowel disease, cancer, and depression.
Nakazawa writes, “All disease is multifactorial. Past trauma is one of those factors. I can’t help but think of how my own story might have been different if the medical community had been trauma-aware…and had offered therapeutic interventions.”8
A. Unadulterated therapeutic grade essential oils provide an answer to how we might be able to help ourselves to better health and to non-medically offload deep burried emotional experience, trauma, and grief.

Better Bath Salts

IMG_5803

What tired body doesn’t want to sink into an Epsom bath 🛀 infused with Genuine plant power soaking into every pore and cell? ~ soothing, supporting, balancing. Anyone? Anyone?

Did you know that adding a few drops of essential oil to a handful of epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) before tossing into the water “carries” your essential oil into the bathwater?

Even though essential oil‘s are not fatty oil’s, we call them “oils” because they float on water. Essential oils float on water because their molecules are made of hydrocarbons (hydrogen & carbon atoms) which are much less dense (lighter) than water.

Why add your EO’s to a “bath salt” base? …

When we allow essential oil droplets to absorb into a handful of “bath salts” first (Epsom salt + a teaspoon or so of baking Soda (sodium bicarbonate) and maybe even a little mineral salt (Himalayan pink salt or Brittany grey sea salt) the bath salts “disperse” or “carry” the lighter weight essential oil molecules throughout the the bathwater, and the bath salts themselves provide important magnesium & trace minerals for your body to absorb along with the benefits of your essential oils!

Making your own therapeutic bath salts is easy and cost effective! Did you know that when you blend Epsom Salt and Baking Soda with YLTG essential oils, you get a wonderful way to detox the body and help rid your body of harmful chemicals?

Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) is rich in magnesium, an electrolyte mineral we all need! Magnesium not only improves sleep – when absorbed through the skin it works to relieve muscle tension, inflammation in joints, and pain. It alleviates tension headaches and abdominal cramps, bronchial asthma, and is healing to cuts and abrasions, making Better Bath Salts an excellent choice as a foot soak.

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) or NaHCO3, (one salt ion + hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen), exfoliates the skin, and is alkalinizing making it beneficial for rashes and yeast infections. Sodium bicarbonate also helps relieve bug bites, and burns.

Young Living therapeutic grade Lavender essential oil is antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-itch, analgesic (relieves pain & inflammation in joints & muscles), soothing, anti-stress, anti-anxiety, and supports a healthy immune system. Combine Lavender essential oil with Lemon and / or Peppermint oil to relieve allergies.

BETTER BATH SALTS ‘recipe’:

Simply use a 1:4 ratio of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) to Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), plus pure Young Living therapeutic grade essential oils of your choice.

For a small 6 oz glass jar that’s 1/4 cup epsom salt + 1 Tablespoon cup baking soda. Add a few drops of Young Living therapeutic grade essential oils and stir together well.

Young Living’s therapeutic grade Lavender essential oil, Ylang Ylang essential oil, ‘Joy’ essential oil blend, or ‘Aroma Siez’ essential oil blend, are all lovely choices for bath salts, generally used in an evening bath.

If desired, for “fancy” gift giving, add a Tbsp of dried flowers of choice (lavender flowers, chamomile flowers, hibiscus, or comfrey) to the top of your jar of bath salts.

Natural Bug Repellent

IMG_3936

🌱💚💦🌱💚💦🌱💚💦🌱

You can make your own safe, well researched, essential oil-infused, natural insect repellent that works! We’re helping you to kick the harsh and toxic ingredients out of your Spring, and out of your life!

🌱💚💦🌱💚💦🌱💚💦🌱

Did you know that just because “citronella” is written in bold on the packaging of an insect repellent, candle, etc., it may still contain one of the synthetic pyrethroids.

Check the label…
http://articles.mercola.com/…/natural-insect-repellents.aspx

Ever wonder why your lungs feel so heavy around a burning mosquito coil or tiki torch fuel?

A study of mosquito coils sold in the U.S. found that some mosquito coils contain octachlorodipropyl ether (s-2) that, during the smouldering of the coils, produces an extremely potent lung carcinogen as a byproduct called (bis(chloromethyl)ether – or “BCME”). Fortunately, s-2 is banned in many countries.

To DEET or NOT to DEET?

Did you ever stop to think that what’s in your ‘bug spray’ could have a negative impact on your health? DEET, developed in the U.S. for the army during the second World War, was originally tested as a pesticide on farmland, and has significant drawbacks. It is a known neurotoxin (destructive to nerve and brain cells) and can cause headaches, dizziness, memory loss, agitation, disorientation, shortness of breath, tremors, seizures, and worse.

755FBFDA-1B7D-417E-A0AE-36BF3F5282D0

Unbelievably, DEET is the most widely used insect repellent in the world, still to be found in nearly 200 brands of bug repellents – even though the Environmental Protection Agency in the U.S. requires several warnings on products that contain it.

IMG_3962

Pure essential oils on the other hand, made in nature, and compatible with the cells of our body, may be used to make your own safe, effective, natural insect repellent, that is actually beneficial to your body – cleansing, purifying, healing, and energizing.

DJ’s SKIN CREAM D.I.Y. BASE

DJ's Healing Lotion graphic.jpg

DJ’s HOMEMADE SKIN LOTION: Ingredients Listed below…

In a large mason jar, melt Shea butter, Cocoa butter, and beeswax, in top of double boiler…

img_2835

TO USE A DOUBLE BOILDER…You will have simmering water in the bottom of your double boiler, but also put a bit of water around the base of your glass jar in the top of your double boiler.

0b5f3e7c344a6b3061d02c18fcef3615

As the Shea butter, Cocoa butter, and beeswax begin to melt in the glass jar, stir occasionally with glass stirring rod or stainless steel spoon…

Meanwhile beat together all other ingredients on high speed with electric or stand mixer in a glass or stainless steel bowl…When ready, use oven mitts to carefully remove mason jar from top of double boiler and pour the 3 melted ingredients into your bowl…

Continue beating until creamy. NOTE: If your coconut oil is a soft solid at room temperature, it will melt and mix in readily as you add the hot melted ingredients.

Once well beaten on high, and very smooth, stir in your 100.00% pure therapeutic grade essential oils (start with 5 drops each YLTG Lavender, and Frankincense, then customize further to suit your specific skin care needs).

Pour into small glass jar(s) and refrigerate until firm. A rubber spatula comes in handy to ‘scrape’ the last of your cream into your jars. This recipe makes enough to fill 2 to 3 small jars. Fasten lids and place in refrigerator for an hour to ‘firm up’. Does not need to be kept in the fridge.

Research and add whatever pure essential oils you choose for your own skin care needs.

*Gentle Baby® essential oil blend is excellent for skin care, containing YLTG GeraniumRosewood, Coriander, Palmarosa, Lavender, Ylang Ylang, Roman Chamomile, Lemon, Jasmine, and Rose essential oils)

Hormonal Health Pt.1 Estrogen/Progesterone Balance

ESTROGEN DOMINANCE ~ Is It Real, and What Can You Do About It?

Diana E. Natalie Johnson

Some conventional medical doctors still tell women that all perimenopause, premenopause, and menopause symptoms result from a drop in estrogen production. In this view the solution is prescription estrogen supplementation, or Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), usually with synthetic hormones.

In contrast, many alternative practitioners believe that women have too much estrogen, leading to a condition known as “estrogen dominance”, where there is little or no progesterone to balance estrogen’s effects in the body. Even a woman with low estrogen levels can have estrogen dominance symptoms if she doesn’t have enough progesterone. I still believe this to be true and now several years after retiring from clinical practice, as a woman in my early fifties, have experienced firsthand over the past decade the need to promote hormonal balance naturally within my own body.

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to healthcare pioneer Dr. John R. Lee, M.D., who broke new ground when he claimed that estrogen dominance was the real cause of premenopause and menopause symptoms, especially in younger women.

When estrogen levels are high in relation to our progesterone we experience many symptoms, among them anxiety, breast tenderness, depression, cyclic headaches or migraines, digestive complaints, ‘brain fog’, cravings, irregular menses (bleeding), edema (water retention), unexplained weight gain, and more.

Since the mid-1990’s there has been ongoing research published suggesting that Progesterone has a modifying influence on the rate of bone loss and the symptoms of estrogen withdrawal such as ‘hot flushes’ and ‘night sweats’, during the time of menopause.1

Estrogen is good when in balance, and necessary – it is the hormone which creates our fertility, protects our health in myriad ways, and serves as a powerful anti-inflammatory, however, estrogen and progesterone need to be balanced in order to work together as counterparts. “Together, they are responsible for balance in blood clotting and the storage and use of fat in the body…for positive attitude and normal feelings of well-being.”2

Estrogen also works together with testosterone to convert bad cholesterol (LDL/low-density lipoprotein) to good cholesterol (HDL/high-density lipoprotein). Progesterone and testosterone increase physical desire. “Hormones help with good brain function in maintaining optimal body functions, and most important, they work to help keep us young.”3

Consider the following chart outlining the metabolic pathways of the hormones in our body. Like an orchestra, all must be working in concert and in balance with one another.

metabolicpathways HORMONES

Environmental Estrogens & ‘Foreign Estrogen’ Load:

Years beyond Dr. Lee’s research, we are now also very concerned about environmental estrogens (or ‘xenoestrogens’, pronounced “zēno-estrogens”), literally meaning “foreign estrogens” adding to our ‘estrogen load’. Xenoestrogens come from from pesticides, growth hormones given to livestock, dairy cattle, & poultry, and PCB’s and PVC’s from plastics. They’re another story entirely!

“Limiting our exposure to xenoestrogens is also very important,” writes Marcelle Pick, OB/GYN NP. “Thoroughly wash or peel all produce to remove at least some of the pesticides. Eating only lean, organic meat and dairy products is wise. Heat food in metal or porcelain containers, not plastic, and definitely not in the microwave with plastic wrap! Drinking out of glass containers instead of plastic, previously used water bottles, or Styrofoam cups…

…A diet rich in phytonutrients is also thought to be protective. Phytoestrogens, for example, are natural, plant-based substances found in soybeans, licorice, yams, alfalfa and lots of other foods that are thought to bind to estrogen cell receptors and protect them from accepting the more damaging xenoestrogens. Because they work as molecular messengers, abundant botanical and other micronutrients such as essential fatty acids can help increase your body’s ability to listen and dance to the hormonal music.” 4

In addition to eating a plant-rich diet, taking a high-quality daily broad spectrum multi-vitamin & mineral supplement (preferably a ‘Stress Formula’ with higher amounts of the B-vitamins to support the adrenal glands) is a very important step towards restoring hormonal balance naturally.

Five simple rules for maintaining good hormone production:

  1. Keeping the liver clean
  2. Consuming enzyme-rich food and taking a digestive enzyme supplement to give your digestive system a natural boost, especially with meals higher in proteins & fats
  3. Eating a diet high in soluble and insoluble fiber, and consuming a fiber supplement such as finely powdered Psyllium hulls, ground flaxseed, or Chia Seed
  4. Avoiding processed foods, foods grown with chemicals, body and hair care products with dangerous chemicals, toothpastes and deodorants with harmful additives, and the home-use of harsh chemicals in all forms (including laundry and cleaning products)
  5. Consuming a broad-spectrum multi-vitamin & mineral supplement daily, with higher amounts of B-vitamins (i.e. 50 mg of each), and use a phytonutrient supplement (example, wild yam extract) if necessary, or a for younger women consider a balancing essential oil blend such as Young Living’s Dragon Time™.
