So you open the dishwasher to put away the “clean” dishes and are hit with a cloud of synthetic chemical scent – enough to give some people a headache. Your forks taste like cheap perfume, and your drinking glass smells like a dryer sheet. First world problem, yes, and one we would do well to avoid. Especially as we become more diligent in kicking harsh chemicals out of our lives that lurk in so many commercial products, and invite nature’s remedies, healers and detoxifiers in…

DID YOU KNOW? FORMALDEHYDE, a dangerous substance, given the red flag by health agencies, is still used in dishwashing products? “Formaldehyde can be listed as methyl glycol, formalin, methyl oxide, paraform, formic aldehyde, methanal, oxymethylene, or CAS Number 50-00-0. All of these are names for formaldehyde under OSHA’s* Formaldeyde standard.”(1)

(*OSHA: Occupational Safety & Health Administration)

One of the most popular commercial dishwasher detergents on the market today contains a potentially toxic harmful brew including alcohol ethoxylates

SO WHY D.I.Y.?

These essential oil-infused D.I.Y. dish tabs WORK and are EASY to make, providing a safe, cost-effective alternative to those heavily perfumed and potentially toxic commercial dish tabs or pods…while at the same time PROTECTING your indoor air quality and food surfaces from harmful residues.

IMG_1170

A shout out to our friend Michelle, of The Glow Drops, a vibrant Young Living essential oils group, for providing us with this D.I.Y. and the lovely pictures to go with it…

D.I.Y. DISH TABS Ingredients:

For one batch you will need…

Glass or stainless steel mixing bowl, measuring cup, a half teaspoon measure, an ice cube tray to use as a mould, and a storage container.

1 cup baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)

1/2 cup fine sea salt

1/4 cup citric acid

1/2 to 1 Tablespoon  Thieves™ Household Cleaner (a truly all-aurpose ‘Essential Oil Infused’ concentrate). NOTE: Keep adding Thieves concentrate in 1/2 teaspoon increments until the mixture holds together loosely when squeezed in your hand. SEE PHOTO BELOW…

(Note: Citric acid occurs naturally in citrus fruits. As an isolated compound it is sold as a white crystalline powder, available at your local bulk foods store. Citric acid is used as a food additive/preservative, and as a powerful cleaning agent. A natural chemical, Citric acid is a weak organic tricarboxylic acid having the chemical formula C₆H₈O₇.

METHOD & USAGE:

In a glass or stainless steel mixing bowl, measure and mix all ingredients JUST UNTIL moistened.

IMG_1162

SUCCESS HINT: START WITH THE one teaspoon of Thieves™ Cleaning Concentrate and only add the additional half teaspoon if needed for the mixture to loosely hold its form.

Press into an ice cube tray. Let sit to dry overnight.

Carefully pop your dish tabs out of the ice cube tray and store in a container.

Use as you would commercial dishwasher tabs – add to machine for any cycle.

USAGE TIP: Your D.I.Y. Dish tabs also make great ‘toilet bombs’. Toss one in the bowl and watch it fizz and bubble! Swish with a cleaning brush and flush! Safe for septic systems and not harmful to municipal water supplies.

DJ’s Natural Anti-Frizz Hair Spritz

IMG_3768

Tame your hair naturally. Mist a bit of this D.I.Y. Hair Spritz onto damp hair before drying. You’ll be amazed at how shiny and smooth your hair becomes almost immediately, with lasting styling power, and you’ll be enthralled with how heavenly it smells!

The base for this beautifully natural anti-frizz hair spritz is witch hazel and pure distilled water. To this we simply add a wee bit of Himalayan pink salt*, real vanilla extract (made from vanilla beans & alcohol / no propylene glycol), and pure therapeutic grade essential oils known to be excellent for the health of the hair and scalp.

Witch hazel is a distilled oil, sometimes called a topical astringent, derived from the bark and leaves of the North American Hamamelis virginiana shrub. Witch hazel’s medicinal properties reduce irritation (to hair follicles) that may inhibit new growth. It is gentle, cleansing, and moisturizing.

The same properties that make witch hazel beneficial to the skin make it good for the hair and scalp. Using witch hazel on your hair balances out its hydration level freeing it from frizz and giving lots of shine!

INGREDIENTS: For a 4 ounce (or larger) bottle with a spray pump or trigger sprayer…

METHOD: Combine all of the ingredients in a 4 ounce or larger spray bottle (pump sprayer or trigger sprayer). Shake well until the pink salt is dissolved.

USE & APPLICATON: Shake well before each use. Spray on damp hair before blow drying or styling.

*About the Pink Salt: Himalayan Pink Salt naturally contains 80+ minerals and elements. Himalayan salt crystals form naturally within the earth and are made up of 85.62% sodium chloride and 14.38% other trace minerals including: sulphate, magnesium, calcium, potassium, bicarbonate, bromide, borate, strontium, and fluoride (in descending order of quantity).

Because of these minerals Himalayan pink salt can increase hydration, balance pH, and help regulate water content inside and outside of cells.

Greening Our Cleaning

Awareness of what we are using to clean our homes and ourselves.

Thieves Cleaner

  • Safe, clean, healing environments are important today due to the onslaught of pollutants, chemicals, and global epidemics of antibiotic-resistant superbugs.
  • Environmental toxins are found in what we eat, drink, breathe, wash, and clean with.
  • We can make simple changes to reduce and eliminate the use of dangerous chemicals and neurotoxins found in typical household and personal care products we currently buy and use.
  • Unaware of these toxins, chemical overload affects how we think, feel, and behave –compromising our immune system and targeting our brain.
  • Too many chronic conditions are not being linked directly to environmental toxins in the body.
  • Advances in quantum physics and biology are showing what shapes our DNA, in fact a new field of science known as “Epi-genetics” is showing how our environment dictates and shapes our DNA.

[Your Right To Know ~ Vibrational Cleaning Guidebook, Sabina M. DeVita, Ed.D.D.N.M., NNCP, IASP, ©2015]

Arrowroot Starch: Cleans and deodorizes carpets and rugs.

Adding pure Essential Oils to ‘green’ household and personal care ‘recipes’ you can easily make yourself, is a wonderful choice and great place to start implementing change.

“I have chosen Young Living essential oils company as my primary and only choice in using or recommending essential oils due to their authenticity and guarantee that they are pure,100% chemical free, organically grown by sustainable and ecological farming practices. Young Living owns and operates their own farms now in 11 countries and upholds the prominent seal of “Seed to Seal” distinction in the aromatherapy industry.” [Sabina M. DeVita, Ed.D.D.N.M., NNCP, IASP]

‘Greening Our Cleaning’ can help change our living environments to healthy, vibrant ones, directly impacting our health and lives!

In 2005 it was estimated that there were 35,000 chemicals in commercial use in Canada, and more than twice as many in the United States. And at that time the national American government was registering an average of 2,000 newly synthesized chemicals each year.      [Array Of Toxic Chemicals In Humans Alarming ~ I Am Polluted, Mark Stevenson, The Globe and Mail, ©2005, Bell Globemedia Publishing Inc.]

Contrary to the detrimental effects of over 100,000 manmade synthesized chemicals, the 100 to 1000 natural constituents found in pure unadulterated essential oils from plants, fall into three categories: Natural Plant Phenols, Sesquiterpines, and Monoterpenes. These natural constituents are nature’s detoxifiers and healers.

  • Phenols purify, cleanse, and detoxify the human body by cleaning cellular receptor sites (DNA).
  • Sesquiterpines stop DIS-EASE processes by deleting or unscrambling bad information from cellular memory (DNA).
  • Monoterpenes restore or awaken the correct information in the cell memory (DNA).

There are many resources available to help and empower us with the knowhow to help ourselves to better health – starting where we are living, sleeping, and even working, by replacing the silent, harmful chemicals with do-it-yourself cleaning and personal care products we can easily make with non-toxic ingredients and genuine therapeutic essential oils.

Greening Our Cleaning: Laundry SOAP

DIY LAUNDRY SOAP

Have you ever walked through a neighbourhood passing by houses and suddenly been struck with a strong unnatural scent, perhaps making the comment, “someone’s doing laundry!”

Most likely it was the smell of a laundry detergent laden with synthetic chemical fragrance, or a fabric softener or dryer sheet you that you smelled, wafting out from a laundry room vent.

CLOTHES WASHING ‘Naturally’: We have a fast easy ‘recipe’ for making your own super effective laundry soap – like grandma used to do and then some!

(SEE ‘RECIPE’ BELOW)

And see our D.I.Y. FABRIC SOFTENER ‘RECIPE’ as well.

About Mainstream Laundry Products:

After looking into the list of chemicals in mainstream laundry products over two decades ago, I never purchased them again. It was scary stuff then, but what’s disturbing today is that ‘mainstream detergent makers’ are no longer required by law to list any of the carcinogenic and hormone-disrupting chemicals in their products on the labels. There is a telephone number to call “for more information”. I’ve tried calling that number, and didn’t get very far.

Today, we have the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment. The EWG’s mission is to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. With breakthrough research and education, they drive consumer choice and civic action.

EWG provides consumer guides to tens of thousands of products including food, personal care products, and cleaning products. The following guide shows how the EWG rates household and cleaning products (interesting to note that we couldn’t find one commercial fabric softener with less than a D to F rating):

grade-ewg-ratings-household-2

WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW:

LINEAR ALKY BENZENE SULFONATES (LAS) are petrochemicals that take a long time to biodegrade, which makes them a hazard to humans and animals (as benzene may cause cancer in humans) and to the environment.

There are countless research documents available, including this one from 1998, when the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services / Public Health Services National Institutes of Health, ran a National Toxicology Program study with over forty-eight distinguished contributors from the scientific community, who issued a report entitled, “Toxicology And Carcinogenesis – Studies of Technical Grade Sodium Xylenesulfonate (CAS NO. 1300-72-7) In F344/N Rats and B6C3F1 Mice (Dermal Studies). You can read their publication No. 98-3380# here

DIOXANE, or 1,4-dioxane, is a synthetic petrochemical, a byproduct of the manufacturing process, and a serious known carcinogen. It is not required to be listed on the label, and was found in over sixty percent of laundry detergents tested in 2010.

PHOSPHATES, used to help your clothes stay clean longer by preventing dirt from sticking to them, are a nightmare to ecosystems, triggering abnormal growth of marine plants.

ARTIFICIAL FRAGRANCES containing Phthalates / synthetic Fragrance or “parfum”. Phthalates interfere with the body’s proteins, are hormone disruptors classified as xenoestrogens, found in personal care products and plastics, and are linked to disease processes, linked to various toxic effects on mammals and fish, and can cause skin and eye irritation as well as allergies.

“Most laundry detergents,” writes Sabina M. DeVita, Ed.D.D.N.M., NNCP, IASP, “contain a potentially toxic brew of chemicals that can leave residues behind on your clothing, be absorbed by your skin or be released into the air you breath.” [p.56, Your Right To Know Vibrational Cleaning Guidebook, 2015. ISBN: 978-1-59930-435-9]

ABOUT DRYER SHEETS & FARBRIC SOFTENERS…here is an article stating that dryer sheets cause hormone imbalance, neurotoxicity, respiratory problems, and even cancer.

I used to tell my clients, “Always remember that your skin is your body’s largest eliminating and absorbing organ!”

WHAT WE CAN DO:

WASHING LAUNDRY: Check for a truly non-toxic product at your local healthy store, OR, to save money, using pure natural ingredients and essential oils for scent, you can easily and economically make our own liquid or powdered laundry cleaner like we did (pictured above) that will not cause our bodies harm. See the recipe for a liquid laundry soap below:

D.I.Y. BASIC LIQUID LAUNDRY SOAP RECIPE:

(Note: You will need a 7 litre capacity jug or pail)

Mix together:

7 litres of hot water

1/3 cup of coarse sea salt

1 cup of baking soda

1 cup of unscented pure-castile soap

and 15 to 20 drops of pure essential oil (such as Young Living ‘Theives Oil’, Young Living ‘Joy’ essential oil blend, Young Living Lemon essential oil, or Young Living Lavender essential oil, or another pure essential oil).

Shake before using and add 1/2 cup per load.
