Calming Conifer Tree Oils

Bruce the Blue Spruce Moose

by Diana E. Natalie Johnson

Introducing our new Ounces Of Prevention mascot…

 Bruce the Blue Spruce Moose.

During the autumn and winter months Bruce tends to gravitate toward conifer, or “evergreen tree” oils. With their crisp, clean aromas, he finds their aromatic molecules to be quite uplifting and balancing, full of amazing molecules known as terpenes.

The grounding properties of conifer essential oils may aid Bruce’s mental clarity and focus as he goes about his work, and also after a long day help to relieve stress, and instil a sense of balance, peace, and calm. Bruce turns to conifers to help revive, energize, and motivate him during long, dull, winter months. He finds they provide him with renewed energy, strength, and sense of purpose.

Autumn compositions 4

Some of Bruce’s favourite conifer oils include the following, and of course they are each sustainably sourced oils of the highest standard distilled by Young Living Essential Oils:

IDAHO BLUE SPRUCE (Pinaceae conifer): exclusive to Young Living’s Highland Flats Tree Farm at Naples, Idaho, and distilled at Young Living’s St. Maries farm in Idaho, this remarkable Blue Spruce contains particularly high levels of alpha-pinene and limonene. It is said that at night, Bruce and his forest friends lie down beneath Spruce trees for protection, and the recharging and rejuvenation the trees bring.

IDAHO BALSAM FIR (Abies balsamea, Balsam Canada): Bruce loves the crisp refreshing woodsy aroma of Balsam Fir, found in Canada and the USA. Balsam fir is often used in essential oil blends applied to sore muscles, ligaments, and tendons, and to ease respiratory and sinus congestion. Bruce’s beauty secret to wrinkle free skin has a lot to do with Balsam Fir, but don’t tell the other bears.

CYPRESS (Cupressaceae sempervirens): Grown in France and Spain, this fresh, woody evergreen essential oil high in Alpha-pinene, may help to support Bruce’s circulatory (lymphatic and cardiovascular system) wellness, as well as his muscles and bones.

PINE (Pinaceae conifer): Emotionally balancing with its refreshing empowering aroma, Bruce finds Pine essential oil to be very calming and help with both physical and mental fatigue. Bruce likes to be around Pine when he needs support for his respiratory system.

CEDARWOOD (Pinaceae conifer) Cedrus atlantica: Super high in Sesquiterpene molecules (up to 90%), this species of cedar, with its beautiful sweet aroma, is most closely related to the biblical Cedars of Lebanon, and may support Bruce’s nervous system, and respiratory system. Bruce finds Cedarwood to be extremely calming and enjoys deep restorative sleep when he breathes in the Cedarwood molecules before crawling into his comfy bed for the night. Other traditional uses for Cedarwood which Bruce may or may not know about include hair, scalp, and skin health, and aid for skin irritation, cuts, bruises, acne, boils, and burns.

Bruce the Blue Spruce Moose at home

BLACK SPRUCE (Pinaceae conifer): Lastly, Bruce enjoys the benefits of Black Spruce, especially at the end of a long day, to his nervous and respiratory system, and finds Northern Lights Black Spruce, with its naturally occurring constituents alpha-pinene, camphene, and beta-pinene, to be particularly emotionally balancing. Bruce loves the grounding rich woodsy-fresh aroma of this essential oil which can be applied anywhere – to the bottoms of his feet, along his spine, down the back of his neck, or used for massaging his tired muscles when he gets home to his cozy den.

TOP TIPS for BETTER SLEEP

IMG_5319

If you’re in your twenties, a student , working, travelling – no matter who you are – did you know that turning off your electronics earlier in the evening and initiating a bedtime routine without “blue light”, is one of the top proven ways you can enjoy better more restorative sleep?

Age demographic: Who’s Using A Cellphone In The Bedroom?

Percent Who Don’t Sleep as Well Because of Technology*:

Percent of respondents, by age bracket, who said they agreed with the statement “I don’t sleep as well as I used to because I am connected to technology all the time” at a level of 8, 9, or 10, with 10 points meaning it describes them exactly (Time/Qualcomm)

ESSENTIAL OILS: MISSING LINKS FOR SOUND SLEEP

Using essential oils aromatically and topically at bedtime may also facilitate deep restorative sleep. Specific molecules found within certain pure therapeutic grade essential oils help to calm the mind and body, even stimulate they body’s natural production of serotonin (converted to melatonin).

A few drops of Lavender and Cedarwood essential oil, for example, in a cool mist ultrasonic diffuser, for example, can have a significant impact – improving our quality of sleep each night.

Or make a sleepy time roller ball bottle like THIS ONE and apply to feet, wrists, neck, or pillow at bedtime.

Single Essential Oils: Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha)

IMG_2339

❣️❣️❣️ Myrrh is a true GIFT we are blessed to have access to. A little Myrrh goes a long way, making it a valuable investment for your natural health cabinet…
With it’s warm, uplifting earthy aroma, and so many practical benefits from skin to infections, Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) is one of the oldest documented aromatic plants used!

👑 For centuries it was one of the world’s most desired and expensive commodities, more valued than gold by weight. Kings and Queens would do almost anything to have their Myrrh! Like Frankincense, Myrrh EO is distilled from resinous drops which tear from cuts in the bark of the tree.

📕 The #1 oil in the Holy Anointing Oil ‘recipe’ given to Moses for anointing and cleansing everything…Myrrh is the most mentioned of any oil in ancient Scripture…notably in relation to beauty, and romance.

😊 Super high in Sesquiterpene molecules, Myrrh impacts the limbic brain / hormonal system, is uplifting, promotes spiritual awareness, and is known to strengthen the mother-child bond, invoking feelings of safety and security.

Not surprising Myrrh was one of three gifts that wise men presented to Mary, Joseph, and infant son Jesus. Mothers’ of the day commonly applied Myrrh to prevent stretch marks, combat thrush and fungal infections, and to deal with tooth & gum infections, gingivitis and mouth ulcers.
Historically, Myrrh was a “must-have” especially in nomadic cultures…it was used as incense, for embalming, for leprosy, syphilis, herpes, digestion, wounds, and general skin care.

😮 Today Myrrh is noted to be a powerful antioxidant, analgesic or anesthetic. Myrrh may combat inflammation, bacteria, viral infection, and parasites.

APPLICATIONS:
💦 Myrrh may be applied topically, diffused, and is approved in Canada for topical application as an NHP (Natural Health Product) and by the FDA as an FA (food additive) and FL (flavouring agent) – not for children under 6 years old.

💦 Myrrh may be used orally for gingivitis, gum infection and inflammation, canker sores, and sore throat.

💦 Myrrh is one of the most beautiful and effective essential oils to use for natural skin care and “anti-aging”.

🌱 Myrrh blends well with Frankincense, Lavender, Sandalwood, Patchouli, and all of the spice oils.

Single Essential Oils: Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata ecuatoriana)

ylang-ylang-flowers

Since I took the cap of my first bottle of Young Living pure Ylang Ylang essential oil, I’ve dreamed of one day participating in an early morning harvest of these intoxicatingly fragrant yellow blossoms at the Young Living farm in Ecuador! It is no wonder Ylang Ylang literally means “flower of flowers”.

In June 2011, Young Living cleared land on lush fertile soil at their Guayaquil, Ecuador farm for 24,000 Ylang Ylang seedlings. By June 2013, the trees had matured into large bushy trees producing flowers year around. The farm expanded to 48,000 trees in 2013. The farm now houses the largest state-of-the-art distillery in South America. Other aromatic plants grown and distilled at the farm include Dorado Azul, Ruta, Oregano, Eucalyptus Blue, Lemongrass, Vetiver,  Ocotea, and Palo Santo. Acres of rice, numerous vegetables and fruit galore is grown onsite including a banana and mango plantation. The farm houses a school, restaurant, spa, and goat dairy. Organic tropical fruit juices are made daily as well as organic goat cheese, milk, and yogurt. Staff, students, workers, and visitors all eat nutritious meals every day on site.

See more about Young Living’s SEED to SEAL promise of purity here.

Ylang Ylang essential oil is steam distilled on-site from the flowers, picked early in the morning to maximize the oil yield. The first distillation oil is of the highest quality and is known as Ylang Ylang Complete.

yl-farm-ecuador

Prized for its sweet, sensual fragrance, Ylang Ylang essential oil has a traditional use promoting healthy, shiny, lustrous hair. Well researched and documented, today its uses include many therapeutic applications  – depression, anxiety, cardiac problems, hypertension, hair loss, and intestinal problems.

It’s medicinal properties include antispasmodic (prevent spasms), vasodilating (dilate small blood vessels), anti-inflammatory, and ability to regulate heartbeat.

Ylang Ylang’s chemical composition is over 40 percent Sesquiterpenes ~ molecules identified for their anti-inflammatory effect, their ability to deliver oxygen to cells and actually erase miswritten codes at the DNA level. An essential oil high in Sesquiterpenes may be beneficial in multiple ways – it may be analgesic, anti-anxiety, antidepressant, sedative, antispasmodic, antifungal and antiseptic.

gary-young-ylang-ylang

Ylang Ylang’s fragrant influence (via the olfactory system connected to the amygdala, or limbic/emotional brain) is known to be balancing, peaceful, able to combat anger, low self esteem, and filter negative energy, restore confidence and increase libido.

Essential oils provide a powerful means to contact this non-verbal portion of the brain including the thalamus, hypothalamus, pineal, and pituitary glands. These endocrine glands control things we are not always aware of such as heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, sex hormones, and stress levels.

Cautions: Use Ylang Ylang sparingly if you have low blood pressure.

Application Techniques:

TOPICAL ~ Dilute 1 part YLTG Ylang Ylang essential oil with 1 part carrier oil such as V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex or other pure vegetable oil such as coconut, or sweet almond oil. Apply to skin, on VitaFlex points, or on location of a spasm or inflammation. OR Apply 2-4 drops directly to desired area. Dilution not required, except for the most sensitive skin. Use as needed.

INHALATION ~ Diffuse alone or combined with Patchouli, Lavender or other compatible essential oil in an ultrasonic diffuser, or inhale directly. Ylang Ylang is wonderful to “wear” on diffuser jewelry. Many people like to blend Ylang Ylang with a sharper citrus oil to balance its powerfully sweet aroma. Ylang Ylang blends well with Lemon, Bergamot, Jasmine, Rosewood, Sandalwood, Neroli, and Rose essential oils.

For external use only. Keep away from eyes and mucous membranes. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition, consult a health professional prior to use. Not intended for use during pregnancy. Not intended for children under the age of 6 without the advice of a health professional.

Single Essential Oils: PEPPERMINT (Mentha piperita)

peppermint-field

Invigorating and used effectively for centuries, Peppermint is one of the oldest and most highly regarded herbs used to relieve headaches, cool the skin, freshen breath, soothe digestive difficulties, sore muscles, and more.

Just one drop of Young Living’s genuine Peppermint essential oil is extremely potent and equivalent to 28 teabags of dried Peppermint herb. It takes approximately one pound of Peppermint plant material to make a 15 ml bottle of YLTG Peppermint essential oil. Native to Europe, three quarters of the world’s supply of Peppermint is now grown in the United States.

Genuine Therapeutic Grade Peppermint Essential Oil  is anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antispasmodic, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antitumoral, and anti parasitic. It is a gallbladder/digestive stimulant, pain reliever, and is known to effectively suppress appetite when inhaled.

peppermint

[Ounces Of Prevention respectfully requests that you DO NOT COPY & PASTE FROM THIS ARTICLE: Please DO share our site!]

Peppermint essential oil is steam distilled from leaves and stems. When properly distilled, it’s primary components are Phenolic Alchohols (up to 55%)  and Menthol (up to 52%). Peppermint oil causes a cooling sensation because these components activate the same receptors on nerve endings that are involved in sensing cold.

Genuine Therapeutic Grade Peppermint essential oil is generally regarded as safe (GRAS) for human consumption by the FDA, and approved by Health Canada as a Natural Health Product (NHP) known to relieve symptoms associated with common ailments, and to restore, maintain, and support good health. Pure Peppermint essential oil has amazing restorative properties, affects several body systems, and may help the following imbalances within those systems:

  • Digestive system (when experiencing digestive discomfort can act as a carminative and antispasmodic: indigestion, nausea, motion sickness, food poisoning, IBS, colic, heartburn, gas, halitosis, liver problems. A 1995 study showed Peppermint to be an effective appetite suppressant when inhaled.)

  • Nervous system (headache, migraine, nerves, shock, anger, hysteria, depression, fatigue, memory, alertness, energizing, mental clarity, jet lag, vertigo, dizziness ~ (University of Cincinnati research study discovered that inhaling peppermint oil increased mental accuracy by up to 28%, and University of Kiel researchers found that peppermint lessened headache pain in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study.)

  • Respiratory system (inhaled to reduce symptoms of cough & cold, asthma, bronchitis, tuberculosis, pneumonia, throat infection, laryngitis, sinusitis, exposure to polluted air.)

  • Skin & circulatory system (hot flashes, fever (lowers temperature), menstrual discomfort, hives, itchiness, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, acne, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, fungal infection, herpes simplex, herpes zoster, cold sores, human papilloma virus.)

  • Musculo Skeletal system (rheumatism, applied topically to help relieve joint or muscle pain associated with sprains, strains, and rheumatoid arthritis. Sciatica, scoliosis, lumbago/back problems.)

CAUTIONS: Peppermint is classified as a “hot” oil. Just one drop is extremely potent. Do not use in conjunction with homeopathic remedies as it will negate their effectiveness. Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, or sensitive skin. Do not apply topically onto fresh burns or wounds. Do not apply on infants under 18 months of age.

APPLICATION & USE:

Peppermint essential oil may be diluted (50-50 in a carrier oil) and applied topically on location, on abdomen, on temples, or back of neck. If over the sinuses, be careful to avoid any contact with the eyes.

Use to massage muscles following exercise, or to sooth tired aching feet and legs.

It may also be inhaled directly from the bottle, or diffused (place 3 drops in an ultrasonic diffuser).

Peppermint EO may be taken internally. Use only Young Living’s Therapeutic Grade essential oil and following specific guidelines for using as a nutritional supplement…For example, for irritable bowel syndrome, only use pure therapeutic grade Peppermint oil, and use capsules to ingest, so it doesn’t release until reaching the intestine where it may relieve symptoms.

To thwart an oncoming cold or flu viral infection, take a handful of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) and add to it 4 drops Lavender essential oil, 3 drops Peppermint essential oil, and 3 drops Marjoram essential oil. Dissolve this blend into warm bath water and while soaking in this bath drink a cup of Peppermint and Lemon tea (to 1 cup boiled water add 1 drop YLTG Peppermint EO and 1 drop YLTG Lemon EO, and 1/2 teaspoon organic coconut oil).

For improved concentration and alertness add a drop to a bottle of drinking water.

To curb appetite inhale five to ten times per day.

To expel gas from the stomach and intestinal tract, mix 1 drop of Peppermint oil with a little honey in one cup of warm water, stir and sip. The same solution may be used to ease nausea or vomiting caused by travel sickness, stomach flu, or food poisoning.

PEPPERMINT AS A ‘DRIVER OIL’: Genuine Peppermint essential oil may also be used as a “Driver Oil”, meaning that when mixed with another essential oil, or layered over top, it helps the body to absorb the other oil or previously applied oil. This will drive the oils more deeply into the tissues, enhancing their overall effect.

BLENDS WELL WITH: Peppermint essential oil blends well with Rosemary, Orange, Lemon, Lavender, Eucalyptus, Marjoram, Wintergreen, or Cinnamon essential oil. Peppermint and Lavender have an affinity for each other and work in a complimentary synergistic way.

INSECT & RODENT REPELLANT: Peppermint oil is an excellent deterrent to rodents and insects who seem to detest its aroma.

Single Essential Oils: COPAIBA (Copaifera reticulata)

copaiba-graphic

No Ibuprofen or NSAIDS…A Copaiba Story:

“I have had great success treating the pain from work-related back and shoulder strain, and repetitive strain to my right arm and shoulder, without using any N.S.A.I.D.’s (Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs) which are known to tax the liver, cause stomach pain and heartburn, ringing in the ears, allergies, and more.
Instead, for pain and inflammation I have been using Genuine Therapeutic Grade Copaiba Essential Oil from Young Living, applied directly to the skin and massaged in to the affected area. We have used Copaiba alone, both ‘neat’ and diluted in a carrier oil, with almost immediate noticeable results.
We have also used Copaiba as a ‘magnifier oil’ to amplify the effects of a previously applied essential oil for pain. For example, the time I dropped a heavy crystal vase on the top of my husbands foot. In this case we immediately applied PanAway™ Essential Oil Blend to the bruised area, followed by Copaiba approximately thirty minutes following the first oil application, to ‘drive in’ the first oil and amplify it’s effectivness. The pain and swelling was gone within the hour with no visible bruising!
It’s good to know there are amazing natural plant based medicines known for centuries to other cultures which we can now use for inflammation and pain that are natural and safe without harmful side effects.”
~ Diana E. Natalie Johnson

About Copaiba:

Copaiba trees grow in rainforest regions of the world such as Peru and Brazil. The oil we use is distilled from the gum resin that is wild harvested from Brazilian Copaiba tree. This genuine grade essential oil contains the highest amounts of beta caryophyllene (55 %) of any know essential oil. Caryophyllene is a well known plant chemical which has been documented with regard to its strong anti-inflammatory effects.

“A single copaiba tree can provide about 40 liters of oleoresin annually, making it a sustainable rainforest resource that can be harvested without destroying the tree or the forest in which it grows”.

The Essential Oils Desk Reference ~ Sixth Edition, sites thirteen research studies published on Copaiba’s properties and actions within the body. Much of the clinical research performed to date has verified the traditional uses of Copaiba.

Only the Brazilian copaiba or ‘copal’ as it is called in Brazil (derived from the the Spanish word for incense, “copelli”), has a GRAS distinction in the United States, and has the most published research on its anti-inflammatory effects.

“When life gives you ‘lemons’? … try a little YLTG lemon oil!”

lemon-oil

Lemon essential oil, cold pressed from lemon rind, is useful for SO many things! Did you know it takes 3,000 lemons to produce 1 kilogram of lemon essential oil?

The uplifting, invigorating, fresh aroma of pure lemon oil has been found to promote clarity of thought and purpose, boost immunity, induce relaxation, and reduce depression and anxiety.

Lemon essential oil is extremely high in Monoterpenes, infinitesimally tiny molecules that can enter the blood stream in minutes.

Lemon essential oil supports the regeneration of white blood cells, stimulates the production of red blood cells and purifies the blood.

The key constituent in lemon oil is Limonene, a potent antioxidant phytochemical, studied for its ability to prevent DNA damage linked to cancer and accelerated aging, and extensively studied (in over 50 clinical studies) for its ability to combat tumor growth.

Lemon oil has also been investigated for its potential to reduce LDL cholesterol levels and stimulate normal peristalsis (the rhythmic contraction of the bowel which aids proper elimination).

Lemon creates alkalinity in the body and improves the function of the pancreas, gallbladder and liver. Genuine Lemon Essential Oil is approved by Health Canada as a ‘food flavouring’ and by the FDA as a dietary essential oil. One or two drops may be carefully ingested mixed with olive or coconut oil in a cellulose or gelatin capsule, OR mixed in water or juice, for short term mild detoxification purposes, or to ease digestion, acid reflux, and to expel gas from the intestines.

Lemon oil has been found to have the following medicinal properties:

  • antiseptic

  • fights urinary tract infection
  • anti-anxiety
  • antidepressant – lifts feelings of sluggishness and apathy, brightens your outlook, leaving the mind alert and clear

Single Essential Oils: Frankincense & Sacred Frankincense / (Boswellia carteri) & (Boswellia sacra)

“Frankincense is good for everything from gout to a broken head.” [Egyptian saying] Today we might say, “Frankincense is good for everything from head to toe.”

“Used to treat every conceivable ill known to man”, frankincense was valued more than gold during ancient times, and only those with great wealth and abundance possessed it. It is mentioned in one of the oldest known medical records, the Ebers Papyrus (16th century BC), an ancient Egyptian list of 877 prescriptions and recipes.

In ancient times wine was fortified with Frankincense to aid digestion. Frankincense is the second-most mentioned oil in the Bible next to Myrrh. It is referred to eighty-one times throughout scripture, including references to its use in stopping a plague (Numbers 16:46-50) and it being gifted by wise men to Mary and Joseph (Matthew 2:11, Isaiah 60:6) for anointing and care of their Christ child, Jesus, throughout his infancy to keep Him strong and healthy. By this time, it was commonly understood that Frankincense was a healing oil good for almost anything from scrapes and bruises to the common cold.

YL Frankincense

Frankincense, with it’s spicy, woodsy, sweet aroma, has been diffused or burned in churches for centuries and is found in many modern colognes and perfumes, including the women’s perfume Youth Dew® by Estee Lauder, and the men’s fragrances, Aqua Brava®, Giorgio®, and Old Spice®. Frankincense blends well with Lavender, Basil, Cypress, Pine, Myrrh, Bergamot, Patchouli, Citrus oils, Geranium, Ylang Ylang, and Sandalwood.

frankincense tree

Named after the Scottish botanist Dr. John Boswell, and British surgeon and herbalist, Dr. H.J. Carter, Frankincense oil is steam distilled from the Oleo-gum-resin that is tapped from the trunks and limbs of the Frankincense tree, a small tree native to North Africa, which grows today in Oman, Yemen, and Somalia. Collecting the gum-resin in the distant and arid regions in which the trees grow naturally, is a painstaking and tedious process, accounting for the high cost of the precious essential oil.

The molecular chemistry of Frankincense:

  • Monoterpenes – up to 82% > reprogram cellular memory promoting permanent healing, maintaining normal cellular regeneration.
  • Sesquiterpenes – 8%
  • Alcohols – 4%
  • Esters – yes
  • Ketones – yes

Key chemical constituents in Frankincense include Alpha-Pinene (30-65%), Limonene (8-20%), Alpha-Thujene (up to 15%), and Beta-Caryophyllene (up to 5%). The latter of which provides local anaesthetic activity.

Frankincense ~ Properties / Actions in the human body:

  • analgesic
  • antispasmodic
  • calms the nervous system – antidepressant / anti-anxiety / uplifting / grief / emotional release

  • astringent / tones and contracts tissue – regenerating to aging skin
  • anti-inflammatory
  • antioxidant

  • cellular regeneration
  • expectorant – pulmonary antiseptic – eases coughs, chronic bronchitis, laryngitis, and asthma attacks or shortness of breath
