After a long Canadian winter with little to no direct sun exposure, many of us find ourselves suddenly outdoors, gardening, doing yard work, camping, hiking, boating…and can easily be caught off guard when it comes to sun protection.
I was gardening wearing short sleeves on the long weekend in May and ended up with what’s commonly known as a “sun rash”, possibly what’s called Polymorphous light eruption (PMLE) – which is basically an allergic reaction in photosensitive skin to sunlight in early spring and summer. Evidently, PMLE on sun-exposed skin, is the second most common sun-related skin problem next to sun burn.
To protect our skin against “sun rash” we could certainly make good use of a natural mineral sunscreen lotion with a broad spectrum SPF of 10 or higher…
…If we get caught without protection and end up with the bumpy post-sun exposure “rash” like I did we can make this simple D.I.Y. essential oil-infused after-sun spray to soothe & restore compromised skin. This spray can be made simply using two of the oils from your Young Living Essential Oils Premium Starter Kit (Lavender, and Frankincense)…
I noticed marked IMPROVEMENT overnight once this soothing after-sun spray was applied to the affected areas of my skin (arms, face, neck, and knees). I continued to apply it the following day and by evening my skin looked healthy again.
SOOTHING AFTER-SUN SPRAY – in a 2 ounce spray bottle:
• 1/2 ounce organic unscented Witch Hazel
• 1 ounce organic aloe vera juice
• 15 drops genuine Young Living Lavender essential oil
(• optional when available: 5 drops each Australian Blue Cypress, and/or Roman Chamomile, and/or Helichrysum essential oil. Note to Canadian YL Members: the Young Living blend of skin-loving oils called ‘Highest Potential‘ contains Blue Cypress essential oil, so we used this blend instead of Australian Blue Cypress).
• 2 drops pure vegetable glycerine
• (optional if you have it: 1/2 teaspoon MSM Powder – organic sulfur works as an anti inflammatory and has a skin repairing effect)
• top up with pure distilled water
Attach spray top tightly to bottle and gently rock back and forth to combine all ingredients. Mist regularly (morning, noon, evening) onto affected skin.
I noticed MARKED improvement OVERNIGHT once this soothing after-sun spray was applied to the affected areas of my skin (arms, face, neck, and knees). I continued applying it the following day and by evening my skin had returned to ‘normal’.
