D.I.Y. Bleach Alternative

DIY Bleach

As ‘gate-keepers’ to our home we continue to know more and do better – ditching undesirable chemically-laden products and choosing safer alternatives. Through the process we are consistently amazed at how a few simple ingredients can replace a long list of questionable toxic yuck.

We also realize improvement in overall wellness as we reduce the toxic load on our body from common sneaky offenders lurking in our home & personal care.

One common sneaky offender is chlorine bleach – also known as sodium hypochlorite (the same chlorine used to sanitize swimming pools), and calcium hypochlorite (a bleaching powder used for household cleaning, and for whitening).

Learning about the health risks from exposure to chlorine bleach (see below) it is easy to see why we do well to avoid it…

In 2015, Reuters Health News covered an Occupational Environmental Medicine study of of professional cleaning service employees (1) associating lower respiratory tract infections and exacerbation of asthma from the use of specific cleaning products including chlorine bleach.

MORE REASONS TO AVOID CHLORINE BLEACH:

I worked at a job for six years where I was required to clean each day using chlorine bleach. During that time my lungs suffered noticeably with asthma-like symptoms and repeated bronchial infections.

Those who use bleach four or more times a week are more likely to suffer from wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and other respiratory issues compared to non-bleach users….There is a clear connection between bleach and other toxic cleaning supplies and the development of asthma in individuals who have had no prior signs of any breathing difficulty. For those who already struggle with asthma, chlorine bleach may irritate the lungs and further aggravate asthmatic symptoms.(1)

Think about this for a moment in the context of your own home. Whether you clean your home or have a housekeeper, if chlorine bleach or any household cleaner with bleach in it is being used on a regular basis, this is exposure to take into consideration if you experience breathing, respiratory, or lung issues.

Chlorine bleach can react with other common household cleaners like ammonia or even vinegar, and produce toxic gases. In fact, ammonia-based cleaners (glass cleaner, for example) can create high concentrations of chlorine gas when mixed with bleach, which can cause asthma after a single exposure. (1)

Bleach is also dangerous if swallowed. Bleach can burn skin and eyes causing serious injury or permanent damage.

NATURAL BLEACH ALTERNATIVES

Hydrogen peroxide (3% solution) often used topically as a disinfectant, is a non-toxic sanitizer and whitener that does not have the harsh side effects of a chlorine bleach. Hydrogen peroxide can be used with  laundry (whites and colours), or for tubs, tile and grout. Adding about about a cup of hydrogen peroxide to your wash water and soaking fabrics for 15 – 30 minutes will revitalize dingy or yellowed whites.

Lemon juice is a natural lightener. When combined with hydrogen peroxide and essential oils, it can be a fantastic Do-It-Yourself natural bleach alternative. Combined with baking soda, it works great to whiten and sanitize tub tile & grout.

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is an all-time favorite natural whitener and softener added to D.I.Y. Fabric Softener , D.I.Y. Laundry Soap, or ‘Sink & Tub Scrub’ (soft scrub cleanser) for sinks, tubs, counter tops and more.

Genuine Young Living Essential Oils are awesome for safe natural household cleaning and sanitizing. Essential oils are economical (a little goes a long way!) and practical (hundreds of uses) when combined for use with other natural ingredients like baking soda or hydrogen peroxide.
