LAVENDER (Lavandula angustifolia) is probably the essential oil with the widest and most impressive list of applications. “Remember that in an emergency, lavender fixes almost everything”, writes Nerys Purchon in “The Complete Aromatherapy & Essential Oils Handbook for Everyday Wellness”, ©2014.
You may never have smelled true Lavender essential oil until you smell Young Living’s Genuine Lavender oil. It’s a little piece of heaven here on earth.
We often say, “if you can afford only one pure essential oil, choose Lavender”. It is both gentle and powerful, and extremely versatile.
Steam-distilled from the plant’s flowering tops and aromatic leaves, Lavender essential oil is best known for it’s calming and relaxing aromatherapy benefits, used for insomnia and to reduce anxiety and stress as it calms the nervous system. Lavender can lift depression, and ease headaches too…but it is so much more!
Lavender’s most important constituent is linalool acetate responsible for what properly distilled Lavender essential oil can do…
Did you know that DISTILLATION TIME MATTERS?! ~ “Lavender essential oil allowed to distill for more than an hour (78 minutes produces maximum results) will contain more beneficial components than some commercially produced oils moderately priced because they have been distilled for only 40 minutes”. (1)
“A relatively good quality Lavender oil has a linalool acetate level of 4.41…Young Living’s Lavender produced in Idaho, Utah, and France, has a linalool acetate level of 67.0 – the highest produced in the world.” [D. Gary Young]
Young Living’s 100% pure first distillation Lavender essential oil, from plants grown in Simiane-La-Rotonde, France, and Mona, Utah, is one of the most valuable oils for skin repair and rejuvenation, burns, bee stings, and skin conditions.
Studies demonstrate its ability to stimulate the growth of new cells, it’s antiseptic & antibiotic (kills bacteria) properties, potential to prevent scarring, and its analgesic and anti fungal effects. (2)

Though Lavender is not commonly known as a virucide, many people, when fighting the common cold, and especially when the lungs and sinuses are affected, find relief when diffusing Lavender essential oil into the air within their home environment. Lavender’s antiseptic, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties combined with it’s ability to loosen and expel mucus, make it an ideal oil to diffuse and inhale for bronchitis, coughs, colds, laryngitis, and throat infections. At the same time you may use it in a chest rub.
Lavender’s other known medicinal plant properties include antifungal, analgesic, antiseptic, antitumoral, anti-convulsant, vasodilating, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, vermifuge, and insecticidal.
“Lavender eases problems with the digestive, respiratory, and urinary systems, relieves cramps and spasms in the intestines and uterus, and stimulates bile production. It will help expel gas from the intestines and encourage and regulate menstrual flow.” (3)

“One study…revealed that inhalation of lavender essential oil reduced the need for analgesic medications (i.e. Tylenol) in children aged 6 to 12 after tonsillectomy”. (4)
“Lavender is renowned for its effective relief of the pain and inflammation caused by arthritis, lumbago, muscular aches and pains, rheumatism, sciatica and muscular pain arising from tension.” (5)
Try using Lavender in a synergistic massage oil blend where it will strengthen the properties of other essential oils. Again, Lavender essential oil may be used straight or undiluted, or with a carrier oil at the ratio of your choosing.
Lavender essential oil blends well with citrus essential oils, peppermint, rosemary, geranium, eucalyptus, clary sage, cedarwood, patchouli, pine, and rosewood. Use a carrier oil with your blend if it contains other oils indicated for dilution.
Try lavender in bath salts to help you wind down and relax before bed. Rub lavender oil on the soles of your feet, or your children’s feet (put socks on afterward). Mix with coconut oil for diaper cream.
Diffuse or inhale for headaches. Mix with lemon and peppermint oil for seasonal allergies. And by all means use in every skin care blend that you make.
Are you a history buff? “Throughout history…the Phoenicians, Arabians, and Egyptians used lavender…Later in Greece and Rome it was used as an all-around cure. In Medieval and Renaissance Europe it was scattered all over stone castle floors as a natural disinfectant and deodorant. Lavender was rediscovered for its healing properties by Dr. Gattefosse, a French bio-chemist in the 1920’s”. (6)
