The first thing to consider regarding an essential oil, is where it comes from. Essential oils are the natural, volatile liquids that are extracted from plants – a wide variety, including trees, grasses, shrubs, flowers, herbs, fruits, berries, and seeds. The oils have the characteristic fragrance of the plants from which they are extracted, but their therapeutic benefits go beyond our olfactory system or sense of smell! So you want to know where your oils come from – what seed variety was grown, how the plants are cultivated, distilled, tested, and how the oils are bottled and sealed. Is attention being given to quality and sustainability? You do not want oils that have been adulterated or diluted. You want the purest essential oil from seed – to seal.

Different extraction methods are used for different types of plant material. Essential oils from herbaceous plants are generally distilled, fruits are cold pressed, resin from trees and shrubs is collected and distilled, and ‘absolute’ oils from delicate flower petals are extracted using pure alcohol which is removed through evaporation.

In come cases it takes an enormous amount of plant material to produce an essential oil. On the extreme end, it takes 4000 pounds of Bulgarian roses to produce one pound of rose absolute essential oil. And 100 pounds of Lavender plant to produce one pound of Lavender essential oil.

Biochemical Diversity of Plants and the Human Body:

Each essential oil is typically a complex mixture of often hundreds of individual compounds, just as each species of plant the oils are extracted from are chemically very heterogeneous or diverse in their effect, unlike synthetic manmade chemicals that have basically one action.

It is this biochemical diversity of the plants themselves that explains the wide array of beneficial effects an essential oil may have on the human body. A single drop of pure lavender essential oil, for example, can be antiseptic, calming, help with allergies, and alleviate headaches, PMS, and motion sickness.

Essential Oils Increase Oxygen Intake:

Plants in nature are chemical factories! They take in the elements of the earth and sun, converting them into molecules including carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. These are the basic fuels which we break down to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate) which is the ‘high octane’ fuel in the human body. Essential oils contain oxygen and glycosides which convert into glucose in the human body, which is the raw material for ATP.

We know that the immune system can be greatly improved by the general increase in movement of blood which carries oxygen to our cells, and by the decrease of the viscosity of the blood in our body. Enhanced circulation and is vital to good health as it effects the function of every cell, and thus every organ including the brain.

Oxygen is essential to provide efficient energy and nutrient transfer to every cell of our body. Constituents in essential oils have been proven not only to increase oxygen intake of the cells but also to enhance cellular respiration. Increasing circulation in general will increase blood oxygen and cellular respiration. But when combined with essential oils containing oxygenating molecules, cellular and organ function are significantly improved.

Oxygen is also the enemy of many things that are harmful to the body. Bacteria, for example, does not require oxygen for growth and will react negatively or even die if oxygen is present.

The Itty Bitty Nitty Gritty:

When two or more atoms join together they become a molecule. Essential oils are made up of molecule groups. There are many different chemical constituents that make up a single essential oil. Individual essential oils may have anywhere from 200 to 800 different constituents! Certainly the body has an affinity with nature’s essential oils, which absorb and pass through the body with great ease. Many scientific experiments have shown that essential oils can travel with relative speed when applied to the skin or inhaled.

Essential oil molecules are so microscopic that they can penetrate the fatty layers of the skin. The lipid solubility of essential oils allows them to travel transcellularly or directly through the cells.

Essential oils will go into the body in just 2-3 seconds. It takes only twenty-two seconds for essential oil molecules to reach the brain, and two minutes until they can be found in the bloodstream. Essential oils will saturate the entire cellular matrix within twenty-one minutes.

Their penetrating ability through fatty tissue layers into the interstitial fluids may explain why essential oils enhance circulation and why massaging the skin with essential oils can be so beneficial.

Our Electrical Capacity, Dis-eases, Dis-orders, and Essential Oils:

Lastly, it is important to learn that the body frequency in a healthy person is higher than in someone who is not. Healthy cells in the human body have a certain energetic frequency. And the things we consume affect our body frequency.

What gives us this ‘electrical capacity’? There’s a slight imbalance between potassium and sodium ions inside and outside our cells, and this imbalance sets the stage for our electrical capacity.
